The folks over at Action Terrain were kind enough to send us a few samples for a review. First off we received the miniatures quickly. So shipping time was pretty good from washington state all the way across the country to maine. Customer service was quick and responsive, and there store is situated inside of Ebay which provides plenty of security reassurance when placing orders. Orders can be processed through paypal for ease of use also, no credit card number is required and it's very secure. First: packaging and shipping. We recieved our items only a few buisness days after we exchanged emails with Action Terrain. So shipping was fast. We did not place any sort of order so we cannot comment on the order process but we were very pleased with the shipping speed. They were safely wrapped in a thick stuffing inside a packing box. Next the detail. You can see for yourself some of the fine details in the houses. We're hoping that the lines on the roofs are deep enough for a great dry brushing later on. The resin the houses we cast out of is high enough quality that there was almost was no bubbling or "blurry" detail, as you can see below there was the occasional bubble. These are some of the cleaner casts we've seen.
Problems with excess resin (sometimes known as flash) were minimal. So no tools were required to work the buildings into playable shape. Although most of the designs were very meticulous and neat some windows and doors still ended up crooked. It's understandable at such a small scale that nothing can be perfect, but it would still be nice for us with OCD to see everything lined up. Trust me these very minor blemishes will not be noticed on a fully populated game board in the midst of a battle.
Painting the houses was simple, just use your regular miniature paints and go to town (no pun intended). Standard painting rules apply. Base coat, ink, dry brush, detail, clear coat. As we had hoped the details remained visible throughout the painting process. These pieces look great when fully painted, we decided to paint all of the houses to match so that we didn't cause a "hodgepodge" on the battlefield.
The scale was almost perfect, when placed next to a quad 'mech which are supposed to be one story tall (hex base doesn't count). We couldn't really ask for more in terms of scale, it looks convincing, and the GHQ infantry matches closely to the size of the doors on the buildings.
Here's another view of the buildings up next to some 'mechs and N scale cork roads.
So far we're giving Action Terrain four and a half Marauders. The excellent scale and detail makes these houses a must have for any gamer looking to add some urban homes to the battlefield. The flaky detail in certain areas and the very few minor bubbles caused the lack of half a Marauder, but hey we were very pleased and you will be too.
